Connecting the youth of Europe with international politics

October 2022 - April 2023

What is the European Youth Parliament (EYP)?

A non-profit organization that encourages European youth to think critically and get involved in solving current issues.

We count with 30k members and 3.5k volunteers in 40 different countries. We organise 500 annual sessions around Europe together, promoting the spirit of the European Parliament. We debate topics that concern citizens in all member countries and share possible action plans and policies.

The origin of Ourense Regional Selection Conference

The regional conferences are the most important for attracting new members to EYP. This ensures that people from all regions of a country participate in our activities, and helps us build a diverse community.

When I first joined EYP, there was no regional selection conference in Galicia (my state), so I could only participate in the virtual event. Consequently, I was the only Galician selected for that year's National Conference. After becoming an official member, I took on the role of head organiser of the Ourense Regional Selection Conference 2023, aiming to increase Galician representation in EYP.

What does an EYP conference looks like?

A regional conference in EYP lasts 3 days and each day is destined to a different activity.

Teambuilding

Ready, set, go! It's time to get to know each other, and what better way to break the ice than with games?

Committee Work

Time to get to work! Working in teams, participants discuss among themselves to find a solution to the problem posed.

General Assembly

The grand finale! All the committees come together to discuss the solutions they have developed and decide whether they would really be effective.

Logistics

Ourense RSC 2023

My work for the conference…

  • Outreach. I created a list of Galician high schools and contacted their head teachers to promote the event.

  • Masterplan. I designed the schedule for the three days, detailing the timings for each hour. I booked all the venues and gathered all the materials and food needed for the sessions to run smoothly.

  • Managing teams. I selected and directed the media, organiser, chair and jury teams for the sessions, guiding them throughout the event to ensure the masterplan was followed perfectly.

  • Budget. I controlled all the finances for the sessions and secured sponsorship for coffee breaks and funding. I met with the mayor of the city and secured the establishment of a regular sponsorship role for EYP by the Ourense council.

Final Outcome

Over 100 attendees from four different countries.

This was the first in-person regional conference in Galicia since the pandemic.

Galician delegates' participation in the Spanish national conference increased sevenfold.

Since then, the Galician community in EYP has doubled in size.

Galicia now hosts an in-person conference each year.

EYP has expanded its collaboration with Galician government institutions to secure sponsorship.
